HIGH FIVES

Yeah! Halloweeeeeeen is on its way. Lulu was busy trying on her costumes. She didn't like the hat part and told me "Ma get that stupid hat off me, it's hurting my ear!"

As you can tell from Chicchi, she just loooves her outfit. She likes being a ladybird and wants to wear her costume all the time. She loves the attention and likes looking like Cher!!

I've been very happy putting up my halloween decorations over the past few days. These are new lights we got at Walmart, and they are truly MAGIC. Brilliant in fact. They are operated by remote control from inside. Orange and purple lights for Halloween, and then you press a button on the remote and they change to red and green for Christmas! How neat is that. You don't even have to put up Christmas lights. They are also the economical led lights. Win Win!

I got this bag of peeled garlic in Chinatown the other day and I cannot begin to tell you HOW convenient it is. I love garlic and use it every day, and in everything, except dessert! It keeps the vampires away haha!

HIP HIP HURRAH! At last we found a dog food that has helped Chichi lose the weight - and she has! Did you notice how happy she looks now. She has lost a little weight and this food has helped her do it. Mind you, it is expensive ($45 for the bag) from the vets, but it lasts a long time, and She's worth it!!

Ladies...this is the lipstick to end all lipsticks! I have fallen in love with this baby. Why Buxom? Apart from its charming name, it plumps up my lips, and makes them look like Julia Robert's smackers...o.k. I exaggerate a little. But you get the drift. Much cheaper than injections and it's a dream to apply, and lasts forever! Also, the colours have names of different cities. The one below is called 'Barcelona' and is a lovely warm red colour. In the summer I like to wear Athens. It sounds exotic! Oh yes, I got it at Sephora ($23).

BELLY DANCING ON SATURDAY NIGHT!
Not me! (but it's on my bucket list). My friend Bobbi treated me to a wonderful evening on Saturday. We went to Asmira's 25th anniversary party, and it was BRILLIANT! It superceded our expectations. The Indian butter chicken they served was Delish! The costumes were out-of-this-world, and the dancing...Magnifico!!  Bravo Ladies!

This face cloth from Aveda is a must-have in any gal's bathroom! All I can say is try it, and you'll see what I mean. I've been using one for years, and have now introduced the girls to it. Just rinse out after each use. It dries hard, but softens when wet. Way better than sponges.

TASTY TUESDAY YUM YUMS

O.K. you're right! This is Wednesday. Don't know what happened to Tuesday. Divine mystery, just like chicken cacciatore was for me. Years ago when I broke my leg skiing, a kind neighbour in Calgary dropped off a most delicious chicken dish for the family, complete with pasta. I have tried for years and years to re-create her masterpiece, but without luck...that was until last Friday - success at last!

There are several recipes out there in internet land. I tried the following, and like all recipes, changed it slightly to fit in with the contents of my cupboard and fridge. I cooked mine in the slow cooker, which is my kitchen BFF. You can throw anything into the pot, first thing in the morning for dinner that evening, or last thing at night, for the following day. Before a party, I always make my butter chicken in the slow cooker, and then know if everything else is a disaster, I've that to rely on. I call it my culinary 'safety net'. The following recipe says prep time 5 mins. - I'd say nearer 10-15, by the time you assemble your ingredients and chop up the chicken, pepper and onion, and get out your herbs and spices.

CHICKEN CACCIATORE

chicken-cacciatore
http://recipeforchicken.org/chicken-breast-recipes/italian-chicken-cacciatore-recipes/attachment/chicken-cacciatore/

3 lbs. lean chicken breasts cut in generous bite size pieces
I large onion diced
2  cans tomato paste  *
6 ozs sliced mushrooms
1 green pepper chopped
2-4 garlic cloves minced (I used 4 large as I love garlic)
2 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. dried basil
half tsp. celery powder
1 tsp. salt
half cup dry white wine
3  tbs. olive oil
1  tsp. crushed red pepper flakes  (optional - I didn't use)
1 tbs. Italian seasoning

*I didn't have tomato paste, so just put in 1 can chopped tomatoes
and half jar spaghetti sauce -  tomato/basil flavour. Some recipes say one jar of spaghetti sauce. So you could use either. Also I added Italian seasoning as I love it. I did not have celery salt, so I substituted with 2-3 stalks of fresh celery chopped. Likewise, I did not have dried basil, but as luck would have it, I had fresh basil in the fridge, so I chopped up a few sprigs.

METHOD:

Turn on slow  cooker, or regular saucepan. Add olive oil and chopped onion. On top of the onion place the chicken. Next sprinkle the chicken with the Italian seasoning, followed by the mushrooms and the peppers. Lastly, mix all the remaining ingredients together and pour over the chicken and veggies. Let it cook   for 3-4 hours on high or 7-9 on high if you are using a slow cooker, otherwise, just keep checking it yourself. As soon as the aroma coming from the kitchen drives you insane with hunger...you know it's ready! I served it with penne the first night but found it too slippery. We tried fusilli (twirly pasta) the second night and preferred it. You can also serve this dish on rice. It's also low calorie, so ENJOY!

VEGETARIAN SHEPHERD'S PIE

This recipe is SO easy, you could do it in your sleep! and sinfully low calorie into the bargain - and inexpensive! - a WIN WIN situation!

INGREDIENTS:

2 packs of Yves veggie ground or any veggie ground.
1 large onion diced
3 carrots diced
4 ozs. frozen peas
2 packs of shepherd's pie flavour mix
4-5  cloves garlic minced
2 tbs.  olive oil
6-7 potatoes
butter and milk for potatoes
Grated cheese  for top of pie
salt and pepper

METHOD:

Heat olive oil in saucepan, and fry onions until see through.  Add two packs of veggie ground. Mush it with a potato masher, until it is broken up. Add some water, cautiously, a few drops,  so the mix does not burn. Next  pour in the flavour mix (follow instructions on packet first). Add carrots, peas and garlic. Let it simmer away gently and if mixture is too thick, add a little more water. Be cautious with the water, and just add it gradually as you don't want it too watery!

Once the shepherd is happily playing in the saucepan, make up the potatoes. Peel and cook the potatoes (I do it for speed in the microwave). When the potatoes are cooked, place in bowl, flavour with salt and pepper. Add some butter or cream (tastes better) but low fat milk will do the job too! Mash until they are fairly liquidity, or easy to spread.

Lastly, get your casserole dish, spray with PAM so things don't stick. Add  veggie mix. Cover with potato mix. Use a fork to flatten it. Lastly, pour some grated cheese on top

Pop into oven (I do  375 degrees). It takes about  half an hour. As soon as it starts to bubble, and the cheese  is melted, it is ready.

ENJOY! Serve with side salad, or more veggies.

Choo Choo and happy cooking!

MARVELLOUS MONDAY!

Yesterday was so busy I didn't get a chance to tell you about Saturday, and the dream that came true for me. For years I've been a BIG fan of Raffi, the children's advocate and entertainer. Check him out at http://www.raffinews.com/. He has opened up a big centre for honouring children on Salt Spring Island, which is just a ferry journey away from Victoria. This Saturday I got a VIP ticket to his show, and had the pleasure of meeting him in person! Yeah! The concert was so much fun and we were all bopping and hopping and clapping our hands, and making lots of happy noise. Later I got chatting with Raffi, and he gave me a huge hug (he's sooooo sweet!). I gave him a copy of my child honouring book, 'Children of the Stars' and he was thrilled to bits. Yeps! that was something I had wanted to do since I published my book in 2008, and Saturday it happened. And it was as goose bumping good as I had hoped it would be!

I came home on a high, and cooked the most delicious vegetarian shepherd's pie for the family. It was so yummy. It was the second of two new recipes I tried out this weekend. The other was a slow cooker meal - Chicken Cacciatore. I'll share those two recipes with you tomorrow  - Tasty Tuesday!

Today was marvellous because I saved the life of a little puppy. When I was coming home from my walk, a tiny little black puppy caught my eye. He looked lost, and could easily be knocked down. I stopped the car and when I opened the door, he literally jumped into my arms, shaking and frightened. He was sooooo cute! He had no collar on him, and looked like a very young stray. My instinct was to bring him home with me, until reality pinched me. He would drive Lulu and Chichi insane with jealousy. And besides, this little puppy may belong to somebody. So, there I was, holding this cute little puppy who is licking my face, and not knowing what to do with him.

I looked at all the houses around me. He could belong anywhere. I was drawn to a house with several cars around it. Puppy and I rang the bell, paws crossed!! A pleasant young girl opened the door, and thanked me profusely "He belongs to the folks downstairs" she said, and I could see she loved this little fellow as she gently took him from me. I knew puppy was in safe hands.

I drove home, delighted I had knocked on the right door! The rest of the day was marvellous (It is Monday after all!) and now as I write, I'm listening to the 3rd, and final debate between Romney and Obama, and I am hoping...that 'my guy' wins!! We'll know soon...?? It will be exciting!! Now my cup runneth over...Dancing with the Stars is about to begin...LOVE that show! Gotta go!

Choo Choo 'til tasty Tuesday!!

FABULOSA FALL!

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE Autumn, or Fall as they call it here in Canada. Yesterday when I was out doing my power walk on the chip trail, and later walking the dogs in Government House, I found this assortment of leaves,  - I kid you not - they are all real!! I know hard to believe, isn't it? Just look at the colours and variety of leaves. No two are the same. Armed with this visual stimulation, I used it to pull out similar colours from my wardrobe.

LEAVES UP CLOSER

So while Kevin is happy washing his records, Lulu and Chichi busy snoozing, Tessa in the basement, and the girls doing their thing, this is how I entertained myself - putting some Fall outfits together. The outfit below is a three quarter length bone coloured linen dress, teamed with a nice heavy jacket. I think it blends in nicely with the autumn foliage!

This is actually one of my favourite of the Fall outfits. It is a Jacob 2-piece silk knee length skirt and sleeveless top. The cardigan has wide sleeves, which make it look almost like a cape. Can you pick this colour out from the leaves? Bet you can! I bought this cozy ensemble last year in the sales, and it looks as good as the day I bought it.

This outfit looks better on, than off! The cardigan is actually only a small size and was given to me by Ali who bought it last year, and never wore it. It looks great with cream pants, belted and worn with this multicoloured Ralph Lauren top inside. Love love love Amber jewellery, especially this time of year!

This Ralph Lauren dress is also one of my favourite Fall items. It is so comfortable to wear, and is knee length. I have got loads of wear from the matching cardigan. I just love Ralph Lauren. He is the only one for me! And his clothes last foreverrrrrr!! The fabric is such good quality. I only buy Ralph when it's on sale. It doubles the pleasure!

There goes that versatile Ralph top again. It has so many nice fall colours in it. This time I teamed it with an olive coloured pashmina. I have the same cotton pashmina in several colours, and get loads of wear from them. I wore the lime green and orange version a lot over the summer, as well as the white one. For winter I have a purple and black one. Secret...I bought them on the ferry to Vancouver!

I pulled this little two-piece silk ensemble from the archives. It looks nicer on. It has a long, slim and fitted skirt, and thankfully the top is long! otherwise my tum tum would not look so happy!! I wear it with a belt, and teamed it with this pashmina which I got last year. It looks great with my knee high burgundy boots.

This two-piece brown top and pants has got oodles of wear from its owner. I felt this silk scarf which I got from my lovely God-daughter Eloise looks great with it. She bought it in Thailand. The beads are vintage glass from Germany. Naturally...I got them from the flea market!

Claudia bought me this sharp cardigan for my birthday at Zara. It looks way better on, as does the cotton top, and matching pants inside it. I love it, though the pants are a tad tight...just as well the cardigan is loose!

That's about it for now. What fun! Don't you agree, the colours of all these outfits are in harmony with the beautiful Fall foliage?

I'll finish with a poem by one of my favourite poets - Patience Strong. It captures the season!

THE LAST DANCE

When the yellow leaves are falling from the tattered trees
they seem to dance a measure to the music of the breeze
...Twirling, swirling, whirling wildly up and down the lane;
you hear the swishing of their skirts against the window pane.

The last gay frolic of the leaves; their last mad revelry;
the last fandango of delight; the final ecstasy...
Dancing at the doors of winter as the year grows old -
Covering the grave of Summer with a cloth of gold.

Choo Choo! Tomorrow I will tell you about the dream that came true for me today...

CHUTZPAH!

Sounds like a Russian toast, doesn't it? or maybe something you roar when you've had too much ouzo and are busy smashing plates in Greece...It's actually Yiddish, and currently my favourite word. I like what it stands for - guts, audacity, conviction, confidence...and if you have all that, you'll eventually become what the French describe as 'bien dans sa peau' - nice/comfortable in your own skin. It's a quality I find very attractive in others, and one I'd like to aspire to one day - it's on my bucket list!

Just like charm - you either have it, or you don't, which Hillary Clinton has learnt to her detriment. She has everything that equips her to be a great American President - intelligence, experience, dedication, trojan work ethic...but, alas, she lacks a vital ingredient - Charm! By direct comparison, Bill had it in buckets. Her lack of charisma is apparently what is holding her back. Superficial? I agree. But such is life. She seems to be doing weird things to her hair and appearance of late. It's clear her image consultants are telling her to 'kick it up a notch Hillary'. My blog today is to convince myself, and others, that yes, you can learn how to have Chutzpah and Charm!

Look at all the female presenters on the American t.v. networks? You have to agree, they are sharp dressers, with super-slick personalities to boot. Michelle Obama and Anne Romney are no slackers in that department either. Jackie Kennedy also had the 'it' quality. Apparently, it's important. All part of the charm game.

Some would argue (Hillary definitely) that focusing too much on externals takes away from the character-building qualities needed for 'true' confidence, which in turn helps us to be more comfortable in our own skins. Inspirational author Danielle LaPorte oozes confidence. She is known for lighting the confidence spark in others, and is the author of 'A Soulful + Practical Guide for Creating Success on Your Terms. She pulls no punches and strongly advocates "Keep being yourself, relentlessly". Hmm. sounds like a plan - But then what if you don't like yourself? ...that's a dilemma.

Take heart! Apparently everyone has something that's charming, so says LaPorte. Seek and you shall find... Something...Anything!...maybe you've a killer smile, or beautiful eyes, or legs, etc. Goal number one, if you want to be comfortable in your own skin, is to practice self-compassion. Forgive yourself.  After you've gone down on your knees, and apologized profusely to yourself for all those years of self-flagellation, telling your ears you hated them, or your butt to buzz off, etc. the next thing you have to do is a thorough self-examination, and don't stop until you find something you like about yourself. Even if it takes all night, don't stop until you find something. There is a genetic predisposition that makes us all care about what people think of us. Not everyone is born tough, alas!

It's common knowledge, if you feel you look good, your spine straightens, your head lifts, you look people straight in the eye, and it's a good headspace to be in. The following are some tips I read recently from style expert, Ellen Bennett. I thought they were good, and wanted to share them with you.

Wear what you love. Pretend your house was on fire, run to your closet and grab the things you absolutely cannot live without. Take three minutes and don't over-think. Just grab what you adore and makes you feel good.

Do the hanger trick. Set all your hangers facing one way. Whenever you wear something, flip the hanger. After a couple of months, you'll see what you wear regularly, the styles and colours you naturally gravitate to. If you're wearing things you don't like, ask yourself why.

Make a plan.  Determine clothing needs by activity: work, exercise, gardening, weekend down time, entertaining. Combine your preferred colour palette with items you love and items you need. I've divided my clothes accordingly and keep exercise stuff in one section, rough/shabby clothes for cleaning/gardening in another, glam clothes in their space, and finally office clothes. Also, I plan 7 outfits for the week ahead, and write them on my closet door. It makes for a speedy getaway in the mornings!

Take time in the morning.  They've proven that when babies look cute and people gush, it has a positive effect on the baby's psyche. So putting on lipstick or finding that special scarf can bring all this wonderful feedback your way.

Save up and build you wardrobe.  We think we need a lot of things to look good, but really you need only about a dozen good things, and you fill in.

I definitely agree that you only need a few 'good pieces' but I cannot live without my hundreds of accessories, bling, bags, belts and scarves, collected over the years. This weekend I'll definitely be working on my wardrobe, and bringing all the summer stuff down to the basement. Ali has promised to model all my favourite fall outfits for me. I'll send you pics tomorrow. And, yes, true to my word - not a new piece of anything have I purchased for my wardrobe. Enoooo! All you need to re-vamp your clothes from one season to another is COLOUR! For Fall, you'll see all my colours match the beautiful autumnal hues in our gardens - golden, burgundy, fern green and brown.

Choo Choo for now and I have a HUGE dream come true...happening tomorrow. I'll keep you in suspense until it is over, and I'll tell you how it went, O.K.?

HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY CLAUDIA!!

On this day 18 years ago, at 3.15 a.m. our darling Claudia was born ...It was a Monday morning (Canada time) and I remember it like it was yesterday! The midwife delivering our bundle of joy was wearing a huge dracula brooch, which had swinging legs, and a peculiar expression. The sight of it put me in hysterics with laughter. I just couldn't stop laughing (maybe it was the gas too!) I think Claudia must have heard my laughter because she arrived with a big gummy smile!! O.K. I agree all Libras are blessed with beautiful smiles - so it was clearly a foretaste of things to come...and doesn't she still have that lovely Libra smile?

Like my other darling daughters, Alexandra and Victoria, Claudia has been a blessing in our lives. Co-incidentally, Claudia completed the astrological triad! She is the same sign as my mum's two sisters and my sister. Victoria is the same sign as my mum, and Alexandra is the same sign as my mother's mother! and her daddy, and her grand-daddy How neat is that? If you asked Carl Jung, he would say it was "Synchronicity Darling".

The following photos are some of my favourite ones of Claudia. If I had to describe her in three words it would be - Peace loving, kind and generous. Yeps! That's my girl.

HIGH FIVE FRIDAY

So many things touched my heart this week. The beauty of the changing seasons from summer to fall... Some of the trees are spectacular and their colours can be glimpsed below on my new hall console table. In addition the note and gift from a patient which also made my heart sing...Not forgetting the sweet surprise of finding the  $10 dollar bill on the street! and the red apples from a patient's garden...I also got a kick from the following:-

MY NEW HALL CONSOLE TABLE

Isn't it fun? This little table provides a cozy bed for home and car keys, as well as heralding in the season that is! We finally found each other after years of searching!

SURPRISE SURPRISE!

This beautiful present arrived in the post yesterday and made my day! It was a thank-you present from cousin Simone for an astrological report I did for her and her charming new beau. It arrived clothed in my favourite colours orange and pink. The scarf is exquisite! The art work (painted by Simone) even more beautiful in real-life, and the photos of my mum and dad were such a lovely reminder of my recent trip home. All deserving of a high-five this week!

THE THANK YOU CARD

It's not just the card with my name over the shop - It's the shop! My parents had one exactly like the one on the card. The Post Office was on the left side, and the grocery shop on the right. It was painted lilac. The card brought back SO many wonderful memories of childhood. The original photo was from Co. Waterford, Ireland circa 1910's. Wasn't that a fancy hairdressers for the time?

IF YOUR BREATH IS BROKE, WRENCH MINTS WILL FIX IT!

I bought these mints in a dusty old hardware store, run by men who looked like they had never seen a woman in their life! When I went in to collect a part I had ordered, it felt like I was walking into a male-only pub in Alice Springs, Australia! Dah! Whatch doin' here woman? 'The store of a thousand parts' and the mints with their catchphrase gave me lots of laughs - if your breath is broke wrench mints will fix it!

THE BEST COVER UP FOR GREY HAIRS

I discovered this miracle cover up in the drug store yesterday. It is fantastic. You just apply it like you would a lipstick. In fact it looks just like a lipstick. Perfect christmas stocking filler for ladies 'of certain age'. Way better than the mascara-type one I tried another time. And yes, you're right! That's me in the picture lol.

CHANGES IN THE AIR...

Went to bed last night and it was summer. When I awoke this morning, winter had arrived - just like that! Yes, it's here now. Kevin was wise taking in the plants last weekend, and I was foolish not to have unpacked my autumn/winter clothes. Guess who the realist in our family is? We didn't have time to think about the rapid change in seasons, just like Claudia when she went from a Canadian summer, to a New Zealand winter, all in a day!

It's not just the weather that's changing, our home was all action yesterday as we moved things around, in an effort to create peace, joy and harmony. We had to get movers in to help us move an enormous brute of a television, from our front living room to the basement. We replaced it with the one that was in the basement, which was a high definition one. Yeah! Finally peace in my parlour.

Next, we dived into some furniture stored in the basement. We found a beautiful old deacon's bench which should have been sitting in the hall, and not in the basement.  What were we thinking? It looks great there, and is functional. Now there is somewhere to plonk your posterior as you change your shoes from outdoors, to furry cozy indoor 'Honey I'm Home' shoes. That's where the joy and happiness part comes in! The bench used to be a priest's bed a long time ago.

In addition we found a lovely country french dressing table which fits nicely in Claudia's bedroom. We got the movers to move a desk from Claudia's room which I had put there while she was  away. Now it's back in my office in the basement. After that was accomplished, we got Nick & Nephew to dispose of two old t.v. sets, plus a monster green chair I used to sit on with the girls for storytime 20 years ago. It was torn, flea-ridden, had served its purpose, and taking up a lot of sentimental space, which is now freeeeeeeeeeee  (for new stuff haha!)

Talking of new stuff...yesterday, I found the 'perfect' hall console table after years of searching. And I wasn't even looking for it, when I finally found it. They say the same thing happens with love! I was minding my own business en-route to the letter box when I passed this cute antique shop, a few doors up from our office and Wow!!! There it was sitting outside in the sunshine...waiting for me...after all the years of searching. I knew in an instant...

The kind lady in the shop said "Take it home dahlin', try it out, and if you don't like it, bring it back tomorrow. No need to pay now" "Do you not want an imprint of my Visa?" I asked in surprise. "Nah, I trust you're not going to be leaving town with a table you don't want" she said, very casually. "Would you like my name and tel. number at least?" I'll bet that wouldn't happen in London or Dublin or Paris I was thinking to myself. By pure co-incidence the table had belonged to a retired American psychiatrist. What are the odds? Going from one psychiatrist's home to another!!

I love my new hall console table. As I write, she is sitting pretty winking over at the deacon's bench. At last, a place for our house and car keys to rest! And a place for one's posterior too - my cup runneth over.
A place for everything, and everything in its place = PEACE, HARMONY and HAPPINESS...

Choo Choo my darlings!

DEO GRATIAS!

Thanksgiving turned out to be very pleasant, despite the fact there was just Kevin, Alexandra and myself. Victoria was in Vancouver and Claudia in New Zealand. Ali had to work part of it, but she had Saturday off and we enjoyed a lovely walk by the beach after checking out the newly opened Oak Bay Beach Hotel, and Kate's Cafe (yummy food  there). The weather has been just glorious - sunshine every day since July and now people are praying for rain for the gardens. Be careful what you wish for!!

One of the items on my 'to-do' list for the weekend was to take all the summer clothes down to the basement, and bring up all the Autumn/Winter ones. I didn't want the good weather to feel I was rushing it, so decided not to tempt fate, I'll wait until the leaves are down. Kevin re-potted some of the flowers in the garden and brought them in for the winter. Being the passionate gardener, he didn't want to take any chances with Jack frost.

Sunday we went hog wild, or to re-phrase - 'Movie Mad'. The day stretched before us long and lovely and free! We did the usual  Sunday stuff - Mass, Brunch, Movie, Lyle's Music Shop, Starbucks and then... yet another movie!! We went to see Liam Neeson's 'Taken 2' and then later that day saw 'The Queen of Versailles'. I would definitely recommend the latter.

'Taken 2' kept me rooted to the seat with all the excitement, but too many crazy car chases, and not enough subtle plot. 'The Queen of Versailles' was described as a 'Shakespearean tragedy of epic dimensions'. It's a  documentary which uncovers the virtues and flaws of the American Dream as it follows a billionaire couple's tragic riches to rags story. I definitely will not have Lulu or Chichi displayed in a glass case once they go to doggy heaven, as the Queen of Versailles did! Compulsive viewing which will make you laugh and cry all at the same time.

All in all a great weekend. I found more lucky money on the street when I was out walking the dogs ($10 bill)...I definitely should buy a lotto ticket! I have a jar and keep all the random money I find in it and call it my 'luck money'. I keep the jar in the money zone of the house, as determined by a Feng Shui expert I consulted...hmm I'm waiting and waiting...and Yes! the amount going out  FAR exceeds the amount coming in! Wish I could say the same about my calorie intake!!

Terrific Tuesday is half way there, and Wonderful Wednesday is waiting to say Hello! Marvelous Monday did not disappoint, nor did Super Sunday or Sensational Saturday for that matter (this is a new positive thinking trick I'm trying out!!). They say it makes for a better day...

Choo Choo, and enjoy a 'Wonderful Wednesday' - nothing less is acceptable, right?

ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE...

That's what I was thinking on hearing the sad news of the death of one of our patients recently. The man in question was reliable as clockwork, so when he had not shown up for his appointment 2  weeks ago, and not returned our phone call, we feared the worse. His health was ailing...It  was only by googling his name that we discovered he had died in early September.

Poor Stan (not his real name). He lived all alone and had very few friends.
He was separated from his wife who lived in Ontario. He had one daughter who would visit him from time to time. Other than that, he did not have many people in his life. He had retired early, due to ill health   and was a few years younger than me. Stan was easily, the most courteous and pleasant of our patients. So reliable and always friendly. He loved music and always wore interesting hats, his favourite one boasting a large peacock feather. He had an enthusiasm for life, lonely as he was.

I cannot believe he is dead. He had a larger than life personality  (a Sagittarius). I can still hear his voice very clearly in my head, as it was a distinctive voice. He would come to see us just to have somebody to talk to.  I know he would have been really sad not to have had the opportunity to say goodbye to us...or to have phoned and cancelled his last appointment, such was his reliability!

May he rest in peace, and if you know anybody who seems lonely, just give them a smile and share a few words...

O.K. O.K. I get it That Don Juan I met on the chip trail was probably lonely too. And I did say on Monday that I was all for the 'Waves of Kindness' campaign, and the distribution of free hugs and smiles...so no, I should not have been horrified when Don (Juan) asked for a hug! Gotta walk the talk. It's sort of a strange line to cross, isn't it? On the one hand you want to be kind, yet at the same time, there are 'strange' folk out there!

Listen to the Beatles song about all the lonely people...and say a little prayer for our friend Stan. There are lots of Stans in our midst, and it seems so sad that the only way we knew he must have died was by googling his name!

FORGIVENESS

One thing I have learned about life is that you cannot be happy unless you are at peace with yourself, and with others. Conflict in life is inevitable, even more so if you are at the mercy of hormones. Hormones are nasty pieces of work! Whether they get you at the teen stage of life, or in midlife - Beware - they're going to get you sometime! and their mission is to blow everything out of proportion, and make you angry and feisty and at war with the world - well you know the rest of the story...!! They hop bigger and badder than fleas...

So, let's assume you're normal, and are at war with someone...C'mon, there has to be someone!??  - your spouse, ex-spouse, mother, father, sister, brother, butcher who gave you shank and said it was fillet, your obnoxious neighbour, teachers who haven't a clue about your prodigy, your best friend who never returned that dress, etc.

If it is causing you pain...real pain...pain that wont go away... I dare you - be the BIG one and apologise! Yes, just do it - don't even think about it. Knock back the pride fast, fast, fast - just like you would your medicine. It is a well known fact that forgiving someone heals, not only the one forgiven, but the forgiver as well. So it's a WIN WIN WIN situation.

Don't let the hurt stay in your memory, remaining as an irritant long after the pain was originally experienced. Don't nourish it, or give it the power to poison your life, to affect your health, and to compromise your peace of mind.

Forgiveness is SO important and I would love to recommend Marianne Williamson's book 'A course in Miracles' which deals with this topic a lot, and beautifully, it has to be said. To quote from her book "What you have learned from pain can be fuel for
a magnificent future".

Drop the Cross...Embrace the Sky!

Here's her little prayer for peace.

Dear God,

Please teach me how to forgive.
Show me the innocence in others
and the innocence in myself
I surrender to you my judgmental thoughts
May I see beyond them
To the gentle peace
that only forgiveness brings

AMEN

MONDAY MONDAY...

How was your Monday? Mine was interesting to say the least!

It was another glorious day t.g. As soon as I downed the coffee, it was on with the walking shoes and fast as lightning out the door, before the sun changed its mind. First I dropped the girls off at college and then headed straight for the holy grail, a.k.a. the chip trail. My piece of heaven!

About ten minutes into my walk this 'strange' man came up behind me. I never even heard him approach, so it was a surprise. He began talking to me. 'Hey you sure are a fast walker, I could hardly keep up with you!' he began. Whot? Before I knew it he was walking right beside me. At first I asked myself if I knew him. Clearly I didn't. He continued making small chat, and it was all really 'weird' for want of a better word. Initially, I began walking slower so he could skat, and continue with his own walk. But as I slowed down, he slowed down too. Fortunately, there were people walking behind us, and towards us, so I was not too concerned. And it was broad daylight.

'So your name is Patricia?' he continued, taking me really by surprise now. 'How did you know that?' I asked. 'I heard a lady say hello to you using your name'. Sure enough I had just passed a friend Laura on the trail who said a cheery hello as we passed each other. He must have been listening. 'STALKER STALKER STALKER' Kevin said later when I was telling him about this man walking with me for at least half an hour. 'You should have told him to get lost and that you preferred walking on your own' he said. 'I know, but I didn't like walking too slow either, as it defeated the purpose of my power walk. Besides why should I let this fellow ruin my walk?' That was my feeling this morning.

For the duration of the walk, we just continued with the small talk. He told me his name was Don and asked if I was married. (I wonder if his surname was Juan?) I then asked him 'Are you married yourself?' 'How can you be married to yourself?' he asked with a laugh. Jeez he's not the sharpest tool in the box I was thinking! He then told me he was a ballroom dancer, had won a house in a lottery, and that it took him 7 seconds to retire. 'That's as long as it takes to make a phonecall' he said with a laugh. At the end of our walk he surprised me by asking "Can I have a hug?" Aaagggg!! And before I knew it the hands were around me! Aaaggh again and again and again!!

Right. My question to myself this day, and to you too is...If I had drink in me, and it was the dark of night, could this fellow have been dangerous? It got me thinking again of that poor girl, Jill Meagher in Melbourne. We Irish are friendly by nature, and so if somebody begins chatting to us, it is in our nature to chat back. This is clearly what happened to Jill, and sadly for her she probably had had a little bit too much to drink. Maybe not. But it was late (1.45 am).

Today was the 3rd time I've been chatted up by men on the chip trail. It's either -
a great place to hook up with single men! - a potentially dangerous place (at night certainly), or best of all I'm just irresistable hahaha...!! I did read some time ago about a girl who was handled 'inappropriately' by an old man wearing a turban one day on the trail. I actually knew the fellow in question because I found him a little weird too. After the story appeared on the newspaper, I never saw him again on the trail.

How really does a gal know what's in a person's head? Maybe they are just being friendly? Maybe they're weird? Maybe a bit of both.

The moral of today's story...Never talk to strange men on the chip trail...especially when they ask for a hug afterwards!! Aaaghhhhh!!

Choo Choo and happy travels!
